The Benefits of Using Cooking Gloves

In the past, cooking gloves were simple mittens with which to beat eggs, beat fudge, and do other similar tasks. These mittens were also meant to protect the cook's hands from burning when using stove-top appliances. However, the design of today's cooking gloves offers more than just protection from burns. They have become something more - something that can enhance the cuisine!

A chef's mittens are an important part of the chef's toolkit. An oven mitten, or chef's mittens, is simply an insulated mitten or glove worn on the hand to safely protect the user's hand from hot surfaces like cookware, ovens, pots, pans, and other cooking utensils. They are often like pot-holders in which they hold the food while cooking. They come in a variety of styles and are made of many different materials. There are mittens designed for cold cooking as well as those for hot cooking.

Zippers Also Allow The Closure Of The Mittens

Some gloves have additional features such as zipper pockets or closures at the end of the gloves. zipper closings allow the user to pull the mitten closed when working with hot items. Zippers also allow the closure of the mittens to be used when washing dishes by simply zipping shut. A closure of this type is especially convenient for the person who is allergic to latex and has to use a plastic glove instead. This feature is also beneficial because washing gloves in hot water may leave some gauze that may not dissolve when washed in cold water, thus leaving the chef's mittens without closure.

The finger openings of most gloves are small enough to fit only the tips of the index and middle fingers, so it is not possible to use full-size gloves if you desire to use your index and middle fingers. Many mittens have openings for the tip of the middle finger, so that you can cover the thumb and the pinky fingers when you are working with cold dishes. You can also purchase mittens with extension grips, allowing you to cover more of your hand. This is especially helpful for people who do not normally wear mittens, but who are occasionally in the kitchen.

Most Synthetic Mittens

The material from which cooking gloves are made has a lot to do with their durability and the level of protection offered by the mittens. Most synthetic mittens are usually hypoallergenic and do not irritate the skin, but synthetic leather and other synthetic materials are usually stronger than natural materials. Natural materials may be softer on the skin and therefore cause irritation, but they do not generally offer as much protection.

To improve the durability of the mittens, they should be washed with soap and water at high temperature. This minimizes the bonding of materials to each other. Synthetic materials may sometimes develop lanolin, a substance that can harden and irritate the skin, making the gloves more uncomfortable to wear. It is also recommended that the mittens be wiped with a damp sponge rather than with a cloth. Some manufacturers place a small amount of vegetable oil over the mittens to make them less sticky, but this is not necessary.

Advantage Of Cooking Gloves

Cooking gloves offer several advantages over mittens that you might not consider. One of these is dexterity. Holding a hot pan or skillet to prepare a dish is very difficult without gloves. Many women cannot even use a knife to slice tomatoes or onions without gloves. And if you happen to get a bit while holding a hot skillet, the consequences are easily visible. Even if you keep your hand away from the heat source, your skin will become burned if you do not use mittens.

Mittens are often the first thing to wear out in your kitchen. If you pair them with a good pair of rubber gloves, you will protect your hands from burning and damaging substances, yet at the same time give the food a chance to cook evenly. There is no reason to avoid cooking gloves altogether. Just find a pair that is comfortable and easy to use.
